American Rookie

The Courageous Conversations is delighted to welcome playwright Dipti Bramhandkar to Boston College to present her story, American Rookie. Part coming-of-age tale, part social commentary, and part comedy, American Rookie grapples with what it means to be an immigrant at a time when the country can’t stop talking about it. Inspired by Bramhandkar's experiences in America after moving from Mumbai to Central New York State, American Rookie brings to life the joy, humor, and pain of the assimilation process — from mimicking 80's fashion and studying Judy Blume books to constructing a new American persona altogether.

Ms. Bramhandkar staged American Rookie in January 2020 to local acclaim. Since that time, and between other projects, Ms. Bramhandkar has taken American Rookie to college campuses and looks forward to bringing the work to Boston College. The event will feature a theatrical reading of the American Rookie followed by Q&A and discussion with Ms. Bramhandkar, followed by a light reception.

Schedule:

Theatrical Reading: 6:00 PM
Q&A: 7:00 PM
Light reception to follow

This event is sponsored by Courageous Conversations with the support of a grant from ILA.

Free and open to the public.

Dipti Bramhandkar is Mumbai-born, NYC-based playwright, filmmaker and Labyrinth Theater Company member. The Farm Theater has awarded her their 2023-24 College Collaboration Project commission. Bramhandkar will be in residence at multiple universities throughout 2023-24 to develop a new play in collaboration with different college theater programs.  The first of the two, Soft Launch, premiered in Kentucky in February 2023.  The next play explores how socio-economic disparities afford certain individuals the right to protest broken systems, while leaving others to maintain the status quo for the sake of their wellbeing. She presented her new play, Love Lake, about a 'values based community' taking over a sleepy town at LAByrinth's Barn Series in February.  This is the third play that has been selected for the Barn Series.  Her other recent work includes Is There Even Porn in India?, which was workshopped in London and presented in New York (with Sarita Choudhary, Kevin Corrigan and Ajay Naidu.)  Islands of Contentment with Daphne Rubin-Vega, Laura Gómez, Rita Wolf, Danny Pudi and more, and India-based actors Kalki Koechlin, Suraj Sharma, and more, was produced by Hypokrit Productions and The Tank.  She was commissioned by Compass Needle Productions to write two audio plays, Kishori’s Canteen and Learning to Swim, both out this year on major streaming platforms.  Juggernaut Theater Company has commissioned her to write an immersive, site-specific play in Miami.  She has a B.A. from Cornell University and an M.A. from Cambridge University.
