Boston College Continuing Education’s certificate courses in Innovation Through Design Thinking - Online Certificate aim to introduce participants to design-driven tools and processes to help them imagine, innovate, and solve challenging problems. Beginning with courses that introduce the foundational culture of general human-centered problem solving and social innovation, the intent of this program is to subsequently offer additional courses aligned with specialized disciplines.
What is Design Thinking?
Design thinking is a structured, process-driven group activity to creatively tackle and solve problems. This collaborative approach can be adopted by anyone, for any industry or situation, to help understand complex challenges and develop innovative solutions using design driven processes. Through a human-centered, inclusive approach, coupled with design and systems thinking methodologies, the Innovation Through Design Thinking - Online Certificate teaching will be strengthened by a global viewpoint and ethical underpinnings. Participants will learn processes and develop skills to solve challenges for various scenarios - at their organizations, in their personal lives, and for the common good.

Course Description:
Would you like to harness your creativity to help solve complex and gnarly problems? Innovation Through Design Thinking: The Foundation Course will help you build a foundation for innovative problem-solving. In this foundational course, we will introduce the framework, mindset, processes, and methods at the core of Design Thinking.
Participants may attend on their own or with a group. The instructor will have office hours throughout the week for participants’ questions.
Topics and methodologies include:
- Being Human-centered: Drive design with human needs, wants, and behavior
- User Experience Research: Map human factors that drive innovation
- Divergent Brainstorming: Push the boundaries of generative ideation
- Rapid Prototyping: Utilize “Build-To-Learn” design approaches
- Systems Thinking: Understand human and social ecosystems, and how everything is connected
Learning Objectives:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the Design Thinking framework, mindset, and key principles driving it.
- Articulate the difference between a "Problem Space" and a "Solution Space" to prioritize goals, objectives, and successful outcome.
- Identify opportunities to utilize Design Thinking and apply it in your own professional environment.
Chōkdee Rutirasiri
Chōkdee Rutirasiri is a designer, technologist, and educator. He utilizes a human-centered approach to designing systems and solutions that are inclusive, equitable, holistic, and sustainable. He has over 25 years of experience and has designed solutions for K-12, higher education, health and human services, healthcare, population health, human resources, arts and museums, financial services, manufacturing, government, technology, startups, and nonprofits.
Currently, Chōkdee teaches Innovation Through Design Thinking at Boston College; is a member of the Equity Innovation Lab at BC School of Social Work; and Associate Director/Head of UX at the Broad Institute at MIT and Harvard.

Course Description:
Please note: Participants should have taken Innovation Through Design Thinking: The Foundation Course above or another foundational course on Design Thinking and have a basic knowledge of its methods and concepts before registering for this course.
Building upon The Foundation Course, in Innovation Through Design Thinking: Solving Real World Problems, participants will work collaboratively in teams to analyze human-centered problems by applying Design Thinking methods and principles. Participants will be encouraged to craft their story, demonstrating their design thinking journey to tackling an issue.
Learning Objectives:
- Conduct user experience research: Define goals, objectives, pain points, opportunities, and desired outcomes.
- Frame + define: “What problem are we really trying to solve?"
- Ideate in a divergent-to-convergent approach.
- Rapid prototype, test, and iterate solution(s).

To receive a certificate, participants must successfully complete all sessions in a given course.
