Advice to veterans interested in BC?: One of the most important things I've learned from my time in service is that the people you choose to surround yourself with matter. When selecting a school, I looked for the qualities in my unit that made our teams great: a commitment to learning and growing as healthcare providers and our sense of duty to serve others. At Boston College, I've found a new community that deeply cares about their work and the people who contribute to and benefit from it. I am grateful to my professors, the staff members, and the Veteran's community, who have welcomed and supported me throughout my time at Boston College.

Specific roles while serving: As a Hospital Corpsman (HM), I worked in the emergency room as well as responding to emergencies outside the hospital as an EMT while stationed in Rota, Spain. I also supervised the Corpsman in the emergency department, trained EMTs, and served as a victim advocate for sexual assault prevention. Additionally, I supported medical training and operations during OBANGAME EXPRESS, a multinational exercise involving 32 countries.
Advice to veterans interested in BC?: BC is a military-friendly school that offers great resources for veterans, including dedicated staff and advisors who understand the unique challenges we face when transitioning to student life. The BC Student Veterans Association is a great way to find camaraderie and support. BC offers extensive networking opportunities, a strong alumni network, and valuable career connections. It's important to be proactive, whether by seeking help early or taking advantage of the networking events, career fairs, and mentorship programs tailored to veterans—they can really make a difference in your experience as well as career advancement after graduation.

Advice to veterans interested in BC?: My first recommendation for any veteran is to connect with Service to School. Like many Veterans, I was anxious about how to translate my military experience into something civilians would understand- after all, SERE School really only resonates with fellow servicemembers. I also struggled with Imposter Syndrome as I tried to figure out how to explain away my mistakes from high school. Through Service to School, I connected with an incredible mentor and met Boston College’s admissions team during our first virtual fair. I was sold on BC after just one look at their website, especially when I realized my days of service didn’t have to end after leaving the military. BC’s motto, "Men and Women for Others," aligns perfectly with the values of servicemembers and veterans. This past summer, I worked with Jesuit Refugee Services in Uganda and it was the most impactful experience of my life. In the military, we’re lucky if we get a one-hour "cultural awareness" briefing. At BC, I spent an entire semester learning about Uganda before moving there for the summer. Some schools offer great sales pitches but Boston College truly lives up to its mission. Plus, being part of a D-1 sports school has been a pretty cool experience too!

Advice to veterans interested in BC?: For veterans considering higher education after their service, Boston College offers an exceptional environment. The sense of community here mirrors the camaraderie we experienced in the military, creating a supportive atmosphere where veterans can thrive. The Jesuit mission of "Men and Women for Others" resonates deeply with the values we upheld during our service, emphasizing selflessness, leadership, and a commitment to others. Boston College is more than just a place to learn—it's a place where veterans can continue their journey with purpose and find a new sense of belonging.
Boston College is proud to partner with Service to School's VetLink network, colleges and universities committed to expanding opportunities and access for highly qualified veterans moving on to further their education. This partnership reflects BC's commitment to increasing the number of student veterans enrolled in undergraduate programs at the University. Service to School's (S2S) mission is to prepare transitioning servicemembers and veterans for their next chapter of leadership by helping them gain admission to the best college or graduate school possible. BC undergraduates Enmanuel Cabrera '23 and Mattheus Tiger Braga '24 were recently featured on the S2S website.
