Counseling Licensure

The Lynch School of Education and Human Development (LSEHD) at Boston College offers a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling program that prepares graduate students for initial licensure in Mental Health Counseling in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and many other states that require a 60-credit degree. The Mental Health Counseling program is accredited by the Master’s in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC).

In order to be a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts your application must be approved by the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professionals.  Applicants seeking a license in Mental Health Counseling in Massachusetts must complete an integrated 60-credit Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling or a related field (MA 262.CMR 2.05).  The program of study for Boston College’s 60-credit Master’s degree program in Mental Health Counseling meets all of the educational and pre-Master’s field training requirements for licensure as a Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Massachusetts.

In accordance with MA 262.CMR 2.07, applicants for LMHC licensure must also 1) complete a minimum of two years and at least 3,360 total hours of post-Master’s clinical experience in mental health counseling under approved supervision, and 2) pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) from the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC).  Applicants are strongly encouraged to read the Massachusetts Licensed Mental Health Counselor Application Guide for additional details.
